A.M. Best Co. has downgraded the financial strength rating to B (Good) from A- (Excellent) and the issuer credit rating to “bbb ” from “a-” of Illinois Mutual Life Insurance Company (Illinois Mutual) (Peoria, IL).
The outlook has been revised to stable from negative.
These rating actions reflect A.M. Best’s concerns over Illinois Mutual’s modest risk-adjusted capital position, elevated level of risk within its investment portfolio, limited financial flexibility and its moderated operating results in recent years.
Due primarily to impairments and unrealized losses in both its corporate fixed income and structured securities portfolios, Illinois Mutual has recorded a reduction in its total capital level. This decline in surplus, coupled with its investment in structured securities such as collateralized debt obligations and credit default swaps and its position in below investment grade bonds due to credit migration has impacted Illinois Mutual’s risk-adjusted capital position.

Researchers in Mexico have been able to genetically modify maize crops to create an edible vaccine for poultry against the Newcastle Disease Virus. The researchers, including Octavio Guerrero-Andrade of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV) in Guanajuato, inserted a gene from the Newcastle Disease Virus into the maize crops? DNA. Chickens that ate the genetically modified (GM) maize produced antibodies against the virus. The maize also provided a level of protection against infection comparable to that of commercial vaccines.
The researchers? findings were published online in Transgenic Research earlier this month.

Be careful not to spare the rod and spoil the child because you will definitely end up regretting it. Punish your child when he/she is wrong and praise them when he/she does the right thing. Emphasizing the positive traits in your kids is one sure way to help them love themselves and see the best, not in themselves alone, but in other people as well. Even spouses need to be encouraged with words of praise and compliments as this will help them feel good about themselves. As time passed, the grief became bearable. Writing helped me survive for my other children and my husband.
As I sat beside my mother?s side after her stroke, I knew she probably wouldn?t live, couldn?t live. I grabbed scrap paper and jotted my feelings into lines of poetry. When my former son-in-law ?stole? two of my grandchildren the day after their great-grandmother died, the emotions that never die gave realism to a novel about a young woman whose ex-husband takes their children.
As Robert and I lived through the time he was in hospice nearly two years ago, knowing that his life was ending, I questioned God, begged Him to touch Robert. Then I turned to writing again. I used words to cope with the pain of watching my husband suffer. Writing allowed me to stay strong for him. Then when Robert no longer was considered terminal, I knew that writing had helped me keep my sanity again.
Poetry especially grants me release from whatever emotions I may experience; writing the concise, precise words in poetic language becomes my therapy.
